Episode 30: When Reference Becomes a Trap: How Reference Shapes What Looks Right in a Miniature

When Reference Becomes a Trap: How Reference Shapes What Looks Right in a MIniature
Joan Biediger

Reference is essential to miniature painting and scale modeling, but the more familiar an image becomes, the easier it is to start treating one interpretation as the correct one. In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I look at how reference photos, box art, finished miniatures, museum images, and repeated online sources can quietly shape the decisions we make at the bench.

Using research on design fixation, along with examples from historical figures, photography, aerial imagery, color reproduction, and miniature painting, I explore what happens when the reference begins to carry more authority than the evidence behind it.

The answer is not to use less reference. It is to become more aware of what each source can actually tell us, what may come from another artist’s choices, and when our own judgment needs to take over.
