Episode 28: The Point of No Return: Why the First Cut Changes a Miniature
What changes the moment you make the first permanent cut into a miniature or model kit?
In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I look at that point of no return through figure conversion, scale modeling, psychology, and the experience of working at the bench. A resin figure can sit untouched with several possible futures. Then the saw goes through the shoulder, the original pose is no longer available, and every decision that follows has to work with the altered figure.
I explore why that first irreversible alteration can feel so different from ordinary cleanup, how ownership and authorship begin to overlap when we change the physical form of a miniature, and why later cuts rarely carry the same weight as the first one. Research on ownership, irreversible decisions, psychological ownership, and the IKEA effect helps explain some of what may be happening.
Along the way, I look at the responsibility that comes with changing another artist’s original design, and how a permanent alteration can make our own decisions part of the finished form.
