I have bins and little bags full of model parts I saved because they looked useful, interesting, or simply too good to throw away. Years later, some of those pieces are still sitting there.

In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I look at why an old model part can be difficult to see in a new way once we already know what it was made for. Psychologists call this functional fixedness. Karl Duncker’s classic candle problem gives us a useful way to see how familiar uses can make other possibilities harder to notice.

From there, I bring the idea back to miniature work. What happens when a road wheel stops being only a road wheel? What changes when we look at a saved part by its shape, openings, texture, depth, or profile instead of its original name?

I also look at Tony McCaffrey’s Generic Parts Technique, why experience can make familiar parts especially quick to recognize, and how kitbashing depends on being able to separate a part from its first identity. Science-fiction models, including the Millennium Falcon, offer some wonderful examples of old kit parts becoming something entirely different.

Even the way we organize a parts bin matters. Categories such as wheels, weapons, seats, and scenery make parts easier to find, but those same labels can affect what we notice when we need an unfamiliar shape. Near the end of the episode, I suggest a simple experiment for searching a parts drawer by physical qualities instead of names. Sometimes the useful thing is not the whole part at all. It may be one curve, one opening, one surface, or one small section. And sometimes the leftover part really is useless. Not every saved part is waiting for a second life.
