Where are the Women? Miniatures, Models, and the Missing Side of the Hobby.
Where are the women in miniature painting, scale modeling, and the wider hobby?
In this episode of Her Shrink Ray Eye, I step back and ask a question that has been hard to ignore. From contest rooms to community groups, women are still underrepresented in miniature painting and modeling. Why is that?
This episode looks at several overlapping factors: gender bias in the wider art world, cultural conditioning, marketing, subject matter, time, visibility, and community. I also bring in a sample of real data from five shows to look at patterns of participation and absence. This is not an argument for one simple answer. It is a closer look at why women in miniatures can still feel peripheral in a hobby where their work, skill, and presence should not be treated as unusual.
It is not just about inclusion. It is about belonging.
